Misogynoir and Multiverses: A Black Girl's Guide to Fandom Culture, my forthcoming nonfiction essay collection, is an exploration of the racism and sexism directed toward Black women and femmes in the science fiction and fantasy communities.
Although fandom culture can provide a sense of community and expression, it can also be a toxic environment, especially when you have intersectional identities like being Black, femme, and queer. Between forming community with other Black women nerds and analyzing harmful tropes, both the book and this panel will celebrate Black women in fandom and highlight the brilliant Black actresses who have blazed a trail.
